The Horrifying Real-Life Mystery of Paul Fronczak
Just a Normal Day
When things started changing, it was just a normal day. Paul Fronczak was only ten years old, and he was playing around the house. As most 10-year-olds do, he was getting into places he wasn’t supposed to.
When he climbed down into the basement’s crawl space, he found something unexpected. There were newspapers with pictures of his parents on them with headlines like “Mother Asks Kidnapper to Return Baby” and “200 Search for Missing Baby.”
Left With Questions
Like any child in his place — or even adult, for that matter — Paul naturally had some questions after this. So, he ran to his mother, Dora.
He demanded to know what the papers meant and how he could both be missing and standing right in his house. Dora initially chastised the young boy for being in the crawlspace. But once her panic subsided, she explained the situation, telling him that he had been missing, but “We found you, we love you, and that’s all you need to know.”
Going Back
Learning that you were once kidnapped and no one bothered to tell you is a big enough blow to anyone, especially if they’re only 10 years old.
So, what happened? There surely had to be more than just “We found you, we love you.” After all, it was big enough to make the headlines more than once. Let’s take a step back and paint a picture of what Pual’s parents went through that day.
At the Hospital
Everything started on April 26th, 1964 at the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dora Fronczak had just given birth and was spending the day nursing and recovering.
With new father Chester Fronczak at work, the hospital staff stepped in to give her time to rest. That meant when a nurse stopped by to pick up the baby from Dora for an exam, she didn’t think anything of it. Trusting the hospital and needing rest, Dora handed her son over and drifted off.
Today, it’s hard to get in and out of a hospital without being noticed. Unfortunately for the Fronczak family, this wasn’t the case in 1964. When Rose and Chester Fronczak welcomed their son Paul into the world, they only had a few hours with him before a mysterious nurse whisked him away, and they didn’t see him again for quite some time.
