Relive the SpaghettiOs Nostalgia With This Copycat Recipe

Relive the SpaghettiOs Nostalgia With This Copycat RecipeThere’s an inherent family-friendly nostalgia about the days when SpaghettiOs was a must-have dinner staple at least once a week. Cheesy, tomato-y, with or without meatballs, and canned — this meal represents many people’s childhood favorites. For those curious to recreate the taste and reminisce about the past, here’s how to make it in less than half an hour!

For the Meatballs

  • ½ pound ground beef
  • ½ pound Italian sausage (go spicy for extra flavor)
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 egg or 3 tablespoons whole milk yogurt
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil

For the Sauce and Pasta

  • 16 ounces ditalini (or another pasta of your choice)
  • 13 ounces jarred pizza sauce
  • 1 tablespoon torn fresh basil (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons half-and-half
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Grated parmesan cheese

Recreating the SpaghettiOs Classic Meatballs Recipe: Directions

Step 1 Grab a large bowl and mix the ground beef, sausage, parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, Italian seasoning, egg or yogurt, and salt and pepper. Use your hands to mix it well until it’s all evenly combined.

Step 2

Use a spoon (or your hands again) to make mini meatballs out of the mixture. Place them on a sheet pan drizzled with olive oil. Heat the oven to 400 degrees and bake the meatballs for about 12 to 16 minutes (depending on how big or small you made them). If you like them crispier, you can put them under the broiler for a couple of minutes.

Step 3 While the meatballs are in the oven, heat the half-and-half, pizza sauce, and basil (if you’re using it in the recipe) in a skillet. After a couple of minutes, add the ditalini and a cup of water. The pasta only needs about six minutes to cook in the sauce. Once al dente, season generously with salt and pepper and set aside.

Step 4 Add the meatballs to the pasta mix, and serve with grated parmesan for extra cheesiness. Enjoy your SpaghettiOs-inspired pasta while hot!
