Some foods automatically conjure up thoughts of Italy. With its magnificent scenery and ancient monuments, who wouldn’t want to go there? However, Italy is known for its fragrant and delicious pizza and pasta dishes. While you can easily buy different types of pasta at the store, it’s so much more satisfying to make your own!

Making Pasta Like an Artisan

Famous chef Evan Funke shared his secrets on how to make quality handmade pasta with the right ratio of moisture. This homemade recipe is known as pasta fatta a mano, which translates to made by hand. All that is required is egg dough called sfoglia all’uovo, a few other necessities, and a rolling pin or machine.

These sheets will need to be lovingly rolled out, so patience is required to ensure the right consistency and thinness. Funke said that he was taught this technique and the history behind it by dozens of Italian women. Although it wasn’t made by Funke himself, below is a sample recipe that home cooks can try their hand at.

How to Make Homemade Pasta

You’ll need just five ingredients to make this easy homemade pasta recipe: 2 cups of all-purpose flour, three eggs to provide the fat and moisture, two tablespoons of olive oil to provide extra moisture and help bind the dough, one teaspoon of salt, and just enough water to create a smooth, thick dough.

Make the dough by mixing all the ingredients listed above. Turn the dough out and knead it for approximately 10 minutes, and then leave it to rest. After resting, divide the dough into balls. Use a machine to roll and cut the dough into desired shapes. This can be done manually if you don’t have a machine. Just remember that freshly made pasta takes less time to cook than its dried counterpart, so you need to keep a close eye on it!
